Informatics subjects are the starting point for IT-themed study at the University of Melbourne.
This diagram show the pathways into the various disciplines of IT under the Melbourne Model, each starting with the first year Informatics package (Informatics-1: Practical Computing and Informatics 2: People, Data and the Web)

Informatics subjects can be taken as part of most Melbourne Model degrees, including the Bachelors of Arts, Commerce, Environments, Music and Science.
The first year Informatics package is the common starting point for these new generation award programs:
- Bachelor of Science majors in Computer Science, Science Informatics, and Software Systems
- Concurrent Diploma in Informatics (available in all degrees except Biomedicine)
- Bachelor of Commerce with Information Systems breadth
Non-Melbourne Model degrees
Informatics-1: Practical Computing and Informatics-2: People, Data and the Web are also the starting point for IT-themed heritage degrees at Melbourne, some of which will be offered for the last time in 2008
