Informatics

Sandru Santhana

First Year, Bachelor of Arts (Political Science major)

Why did I decide to study Informatics in first year?

I am studying Informatics to gain an insight into the growing role of technology in everyday life, and the challenges it poses to traditional political and legal institutions. The growth of ICT in recent years has uncovered new dilemmas for the political and legal fields. For example, while the Web allows people express their views freely, how do we prevent the distribution of material which may be seen as discriminatory? Do such restrictions defy the very purpose of the Web? Can the Web ever truly be protected from such material, and if so, do we need to look beyond a national approach to protect it?

What am I learning from the subject(s)?

A variety of different technical skills to complement my existing ICT knowledge and I am refining my communications and team work skills. It is a good starting point for what should be expected in the real world.

To me, studying at Melbourne means...

I am in an institution which is widely respected in the wider community, and that it challenges my assumptions of the world

In a typical week as a student, I...

Spend quite a long time on tutorial readings and checking on new developments, which can be rather time consuming!

The highlight of my experience at Melbourne so far is

Joining the University full time after completing the Extension Program in History during 2007.

After graduation, I see myself...

Taking an extended break from study and employment, before commencing either postgraduate studies or work in the political field.

During semester, I work/volunteer

I work as the Policy Assistant for Left Right Think-Tank, Australia’s first think-tank of young minds.

My dream job:

Government minister.
